6-Year-Old Goes To VAR Over Staying Up
Child brings in video assistant referee after claiming parents' decision "isn't fair".
A Year 2 child has become the first child in the world to bring in VAR over a decision made by his parents at bedtime.
George Mantelpiece from Somewhere-Or-Other made the call after not being allowed to stay up and watch clips of people playing Roblox on YouTube “for just five more minutes.”
VAR, which stands for Video Assistant Referee, was brought in to help officials make vital decisions in the Premier League in 2019.
It has since gone on to be used for anything really, in most games.
However, until now, it hasn’t been used by a child to counter an argument by parents that teeth need brushing.
Chris and Connie Mantelpiece, both 37 (apart from Connie who is 34), say the process actually delayed bedtime even longer.
Speaking from her mouth, Connie said:
"I don’t follow football so I didn’t know what VAR was. Next thing I know, George is pacing around the room, holding his palm up to us, and pressing his ear. Then he made this big rectangle shape with his fingers, tried to whistle, and picked up my tablet.”
Stepdad Chris, a former quarter-professional for his mate’s work’s team sometimes, knew straight away what was happening.
“We’ve said, ‘Right George, time to brush your teeth and I’ll take you up.’
Now he’s taken an issue with that, said “it’s not fair” and he’s gone straight to VAR. The thing is, I was really excited about listening to him read this new book he got from the library. But because of the time it took to communicate the decision, the moment had gone.”
Despite the decision to stay up being given by VAR, it was over-ruled by George’s parents who still hadn’t had their tea yet.
George has vowed to appeal the decision which, if it goes his way, could see the curfew rescinded and lead to an extra 5 minutes of watching a YouTuber play Minecraft.
It probably won’t though.
We haven’t approached The Premier League for comment, as the whole thing is entirely made up.
